Take a Break

A month after summer vacation ended and the back to school rush began, I noticed that my family was feeling a little exhausted. We run around all week juggling work, school, homework and meetings. By the end of the day we’re so worn-out that we just want to eat & sleep.
Today was not unlike any other day. I picked up the children after work feeling annoyed by my busy day. I was unsure of what quick meal I would whip up for dinner. Clothes needed to be washed two days ago and I knew the sink was loaded with dishes waiting to be put in the washer. When my children got in the car, the backseat bickering began. My head was pounding, and I just needed a break.
Instead of going home I drove out to the park. I let the kids out of the car and told them we were going on a scavenger hunt. I wrote a quick list of items for them to find. Then we went hunting! It was a way for me to relax. I had a nice walk along the trail and enjoyed the breeze while they were able to play and explore. Afterwards, we ate sandwiches for dinner.
This may seem like a very small thing to some people. However, I am a single mother of four children and I work full time. So sometimes, I just have to say, “screw these chores,” and take a break! This was a great way to let my children enjoy themselves, spend family time together, and get a little exercise. Not to mention, it was completely free. That’s something a single mom has to appreciate!
Here is another low cost, fun idea:
If you have pre-school aged children they may enjoy a color walk. I got this idea from my daughter’s school. You and your child can go for a walk through your neighborhood or through the park. You will ask the child to point out or collect items that are certain colors. You might ask questions like, “Do you see anything green?” Or “I want you to find a yellow flower.” This helps the child with learning colors and it’s a fun activity that doesn’t take very long.
